Preserving a UNESCO-Recognized Endangered Language through Literature

The Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation is an international institution based in Portugal with a profound commitment to Armenian culture and the preservation of its linguistic heritage. Through its Armenian Communities Department, it supports initiatives that revitalize the Armenian language and empower the global diaspora.

The Project: Opening Worlds through Words

In 2025, Booktime received a generous grant from the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation to address a critical shortage of engaging, high-quality literature for children speaking Western Armenian.

Western Armenian is classified by UNESCO as a definitely endangered language. For children in diaspora communities, accessing vibrant, age-appropriate stories in their native tongue can be a significant challenge. This project is designed to bridge that gap by providing free, digital resources to families worldwide.

What Was Funded?

The grant supports the professional translation, editorial review, and digital publication of a major collection of children’s literature:

  • 102 Professionally Translated Books: A curated selection of picture books from the Booktime catalog is being translated from English into Western Armenian.
  • Expert Linguistic Review: To ensure the highest quality, every book undergoes a rigorous process involving native Western Armenian-speaking translators and literacy experts.
  • Cultural Adaptation: Translations are being carefully adapted to ensure idioms and cultural references resonate with children from diverse backgrounds.
  • Global Digital Accessibility: All 102 books will be available for free, indefinitely, on the Booktime app and website.

The Impact

By integrating these books into the Booktime platform, we are working toward several long-term goals for the Armenian community:

  • Language Revitalization: Nurturing the active use of Western Armenian among the next generation to ensure the language thrives.
  • Cultural Identity: Helping children in the diaspora — from Lebanon and France to the United States and Australia — connect deeply with their heritage.
  • Educational Equity: Providing children with equal access to quality literature, regardless of their geographic location or socioeconomic status.
  • Intergenerational Connection: Strengthening family bonds by allowing children to read and share stories with parents and grandparents in their heritage language.

“Opening worlds through words: Every child deserves stories in their own language.”
